Shokudou
About This Spot
Stepping into Shokudou feels like settling into a welcoming neighborhood retreat where the hum of familiar voices blends with the soft sway of jazz instrumentals. Nestled quietly in Bernal Heights, this Japanese spot strikes a gentle balance between being a casual family-friendly gathering place and a subtle nod to izakaya culture. The pace here is unhurried, with an easy, calming rhythm that invites conversation and connection over thoughtfully prepared food.
The interior keeps things intimate and indoors, offering a simple yet warm setting that encourages both lively dinners and relaxed lunches. While it may not buzz with the usual izakaya clamor, the atmosphere has a comforting vibrancy—part cozy community spot, part culinary discovery where fresh, carefully crafted Japanese dishes take center stage.
Dining at Shokudou is less about ticking off a menu and more about savoring each bite as part of a shared experience. Whether it’s silky agedashi tofu gently warming the palate, a perfectly grilled hamachi collar with its delicate char, or a carefully composed nigiri sampler, each plate reflects an approachable respect for Japanese flavors. The sushi, in particular, offers moments of quiet delight—fresh, balanced, and nuanced.
The drink selection echoes this thoughtful simplicity, with Japanese craft beers and traditional sodas providing refreshing complements that enhance the meal without overwhelming it. Here, food and drink come together to create an experience that’s both familiar and quietly special.
It’s the type of place where families gather with kids in tow, where weekday lunch offers a break from the bustle, and where evenings gently stretch into connection and comfort. For locals and visitors alike, Shokudou serves as a gentle retreat—a place to admire subtle flavors, enjoy friendly service, and share moments that feel quietly joyful in their everyday sincerity.

It’s a good stable family restaurant that serves the Bernal height resident. I wouldn’t consider it as an izakaya though, they are lack of that vibe. It’s kids friendly and the day we went, there are 7 kids inside the restaurant. Be prepared for a lot of screams and avoid dinning hour/Friday night if you are scared of kids. The food is decent, not the best I had in town but it is alright. We ordered cheesecake and they gave us ice cream on the house, so that was really nice :)

What a treat to find this place! Excellent food, friendly staff, and great value. I called ahead to ask if they take walk in and they do. When I came at 5:30 PM, there was plenty of seating available. Please do note that it is only indoor seating. I ordered the yakitori, seared tuna tataki, the Hamachi Kama, chirashi don. All were excellent. The bluefin o-toro was so rich! Definitely get that as well! Parking was easy to find. So happy to find such a gem

Delightful jazz instrumental playing. Miso and garlic edamame as appetizers. Very fresh rolls and chicken yaki. Really, really nice and relaxing atmosphere. Friendly unobtrusive waiters. Just an overall lovely experience.

Delicious. Highly recommend the hamachi collar, the bacon tomato, bacon enoki, and chicken negi izakaya skewers, and agedashi. A hidden gem in a quiet neighborhood. Lovely place to eat and reconnect with people.

Good for lunch. Really value for your money. I had the sashimi lunch set and my wife had the chicken wing and salmon sushi set and both were really fresh and good. Will definitely come again ! Weekdays - reservations not really needed, but I've come by on weekends and you should make reservations.
